Materials Science and Engineering at Shahrekord University

Materials science and engineering is a dynamic field that fuels technological progress by designing, analyzing, and enhancing materials for various applications. By understanding the relationships between material composition, processing methods, and properties, engineers create solutions that improve performance, durability, and sustainability. The field spans multiple sectors, including:

  • Solar cells for renewable energy generation, contributing to cleaner electricity production
  • Advanced alloys and ceramics used in industries like construction, automotive, and steel manufacturing to enhance strength and resistance
  • Semiconductors are vital to the microelectronics industry, forming the backbone of modern computing and communication technology
  • Polymers and composites are widely employed in biomedical devices, agriculture, and industrial components for improved efficiency and adaptability

Materials engineers work with metals, ceramics, polymers, semiconductors, and composite materials, applying principles of chemistry, physics, and engineering to optimize material properties. Their responsibilities include material selection, testing, and innovation to ensure cost-effectiveness and environmental sustainability.

The study of materials involves investigating their structure down to the atomic and molecular levels. Using microscopy, diffraction techniques, and mechanical testing, engineers analyze properties such as mechanical strength, electrical conductivity, and corrosion resistance. These insights guide advancements in material synthesis and processing, enabling the development of bulk samples, complex structures, and nanocrystals tailored to specific applications.

The Materials Engineering Department at Shahrekord University

Established in 2004, the Materials Engineering Department at Shahrekord University began with a bachelor's program in Materials Engineering – Ceramic. Over the years, it expanded its academic offerings to include master’s degrees in ceramics, materials selection, and corrosion protection, ensuring students gain specialized knowledge in cutting-edge materials research.

From fall 2024, undergraduate students will pursue studies in Materials Science and Engineering, equipping them with the skills to develop and innovate materials for a variety of industries.

The department is home to faculty experts specializing in:

  • Ceramics and electroceramics (4 faculty members)
  • Materials selection and engineering applications (3 faculty members)
  • Corrosion protection and materials durability (2 faculty members)

With access to advanced research facilities and industry collaborations, Shahrekord University’s Materials Science and Engineering program prepares students to contribute to groundbreaking developments in the field.
